Black Lives Matter

Na de schokkende politiemoord op George Floyd in de VS is de aandacht weer eens gevestigd op geïnstitutionaliseerd racisme. Black Lives Matter vraagt al een aantal jaar aandacht voor bevrijding van onderdrukking, vrijheid en gelijkheid voor iedereen.

De walgelijke dreigbrief die Kick-out Zwarte Piet initiatiefnemer Jerry Afriyie onlangs ontving geeft aan dat ook in Nederland nog wat te doen is. Los van de onvermijdelijke opheffing van Zwarte Piet, is racisme en achterstelling ook in Nederland vertegenwoordigd. Toen ik trouwde herinner ik me nog goed dat de discussie of mijn vrouw mijn naam zou overnemen uiteindelijk werd beslecht door de kansen op de arbeidsmarkt. Dat was 25 jaar geleden. Vandaag de dag zou ik die beslissing waarschijnlijk veel sneller nemen. Een trieste constatering.

Uiteraard heeft de wereldwijde Black Lives Matter beweging invloed op de muziekwereld. Dit artikel geeft een kleine bloemlezing van nummers die ingaan op de gebeurtenissen in de VS, de viering van Juneteenth (19 juni, jaarlijkse herinnering aan de bevrijding van de slaven in de VS) en de oproep vooral te stemmen om de herverkiezing van Trump onmogelijk te maken.
