LCD Soundsystem – Christmas Will Break Your Heart

Inleiding

Op Eerste Kerstdag 2015 werd ik wakker met het nieuws dat LCD Soundsystem in die nacht een nieuwe single had uitgebracht. Net te laat voor de beperkte vinyl oplage helaas, maar: nieuwe muziek van mijn favoriete band die er in 2011 mee was opgehouden!

Gedurende het jaar waren er geruchten op gang gekomen dat de band live zou gaan optreden, maar dit werd stellig ontkend door DFA Records, het label waarvan LCD Soundsystem voorman James Murphy mede-eigenaar van was.

Maar toen werd het 24 december 2015: vanuit het niets was daar een nieuw nummer, geheel in de geest van Kerst op de LCD Soundsystem manier: Christmas Will Break Your Heart!

Diezelfde dag maakte Murphy het nieuws bekend via Twitter met de volgende woorden:

so, there’s been this depressing christmas song i’d been singing to myself for the past 8 years, and every year i wouldn’t remember that i wanted to make it until december, which is just too late to actually record and release a christmas song… but this year, al doyle had a short break between hot chip tours where he could be in nyc, and pat and nancy were home, and tyler agreed to fly out from berlin for a few days, so we all recorded this together, reserved a pressing plant slot, and our friend bob weston was available to master it quickly—so that means, less than 2 weeks after we recorded it, there is actually a christmas 7″, which feels like something that could only have happened a very, very long time ago.

anyway, for the holidays we give you the previous, very long run-on sentence, and this song: “christmas will break your heart”, which is another one of those songs which had about 75 lines of lyrics, though we’ve knocked down to 8 to keep the suicide rate in check.

De single werd in een beperkte oplage (slechts 1000 exemplaren) beschikbaar gesteld als een vinyl single met maar één afspeelbare kant, die helaas al was uitverkocht toen ik het bericht doorkreeg. Het werd tevens aangeboden via Apple Music, waar ik het nummer direct kocht. Wat een genot! Eindelijk weer nieuwe muziek van LCD Soundsystem!

Het vervolg

In januari 2016 werd officieel bekend gemaakt dat LCD Soundsystem zou gaan optreden tijdens het Amerikaanse Coachella Festival in 2016. Tevens zou er een nieuw album worden uitgebracht, dat in 2017 zou verschijnen onder de naam American Dream.

In 2020 werd de Christmas Will Break Your Heart single opnieuw verkocht via de DFA Records website: “Single-sided 7″ originally released in 2015. Cut fresh for 2020 by Chocolate Bob Weston and pressed at Brooklynphono as the snow falls in NYC.” Heb ik de vinyl versie alsnog!
