De iconische poster van John Lennon en Yoko Ono is dit jaar 50 jaar oud. Welverdiende aandacht voor een belangrijke boodschap.
Bed-Ins
Op 20 maart 1969 trouwden John Lennon en Yoko Ono. Het huwelijk werd gevierd met twee Bed-Ins for Peace. De eerste van 25 tot en met 31 maart in het Amsterdamse Hilton Hotel. De tweede, van 26 mei tot en met 2 juni, was in het Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal, Canada. Op 1 juni werd daar het nummer Give Peace A Chance opgenomen, dat op 4 juli 1969 werd uitgebracht als single (de eerste solo single van John Lennon).
Poster campagne
John Lennon en Yoko Ono waren nog maar net begonnen. Ze begonnen de War Is Over poster campagne op 15 december 1969. Op die dag vlogen ze naar Toronto, Canada voor de start van deel 3 van hun vredescampagne. In 11 steden (New York, Los Angeles, Toronto, Rome, Athene, Amsterdam, Berlijn, Parijs, Londen, Tokio en Hong Kong) werden posters verspreid en opgehangen en billboards afgehuurd met de tekst War is over! If you want it. Happy Christmas from John & Yoko. Ook werden advertenties in kranten geplaatst en radio reclames gemaakt. Toen Lennon werd gevraagd wat dit allemaal wel niet kostte, antwoordde hij “I don’t know – but it is cheaper than someone’s life”.
When we stick posters around saying, “WAR IS OVER (If You Want It)”, what we’re trying to promote is an awareness in people of how much power they have, and not to rely on the government, or leaders, or teachers so much that they’re all passive or automatons. They have to have new hope. Everybody’s looking for goals and answers; the youth especially. What we’re trying to tell them is that “You are the goal. Nobody on earth can do it for you. Whatever it is you want, you must do it yourself”.

In 2015 lanceerde Yoko Ono de Imagine Peace (imaginepeace.com/warisover) website, waarvandaan de poster kosteloos kan worden gedownload en verspreid. Ze schreef:

Happy Xmas (War Is Over)
Twee jaar na de postercampagne namen Lennon en Ono hun vredesnummer Happy Xmas (War Is Over) op met het Harlem Community Choir. Volgens het John Lennon Museum was het nummer met name bedoeld om mensen aan te sporen verantwoordelijkheid te nemen voor de wereld om hun heen. De openingszin zegt wat dat betreft alles: So this is Christmas / And what have you done.
