Inleiding
In 1976 debuteerden The Brothers Johnson met hun debuutalbum Look Out For #1. De eerste van 4 opeenvolgende platina gecertificeerde albums vol funk, soul, disco en jazz. Een kort verhaal over supertalenten, topmuziek en een bliksemcarrière.

Louis “Thunder Thumbs” (bas) en George “Lightnin’ Licks” (gitaar) Johnson begonnen al vroeg muziek te spelen. Al snel hadden ze een indrukwekkende reputatie opgebouwd, en verdienden ze hun geld als muzikant. Ze werden veelvuldig gevraagd samen op te draven voor opdrachten, voor artiesten als Bobby Womack, The Supremes, Billy Preston. Het duurde niet lang voordat Quincy Jones ze op zijn radar kreeg. Hij vroeg ze mee te spelen op zijn Mellow Madness album uit 1975, waarop ze meeschreven aan maar liefst 4 nummers.
Na tour opdrachten en sessiewerk besloot Quincy Jones ze klaar te stomen om op eigen benen (en naam) verder te gaan. Hij hielp ze aan een platencontract bij A&M, het label waar Jones zelf ook onder contract stond.

Voortbordurend op hun werk op Jones’ Mellow Madness, doken de Johnson broers de studio in om er als de act The Brothers Johnson uit te komen. Hun debuutalbum werd gereproduceerd door Quincy Jones (die ook aan 1 nummer meeschreef).
De verzameling van funk, soul en ballads kwam op het juiste moment uit. Het album was een succes en bracht twee (bescheiden) hits voort en legde de basis voor een korte maar succesvolle run van succesvolle albums en singles.

In February of 1975 I was in Japan handling pre-tour chores for Quincy Jones and his eighteen-piece band, when I received a call at six o’clock in the morning. In the clutterd transatlantic distance I heard an ecstatic Quincy telling me about two brothers he had found for the band named George and Louis Johnson. As “Q” put it, “these are the two baddest cats I have ever heard.” Quincy had just begun to record his hit album “Mellow Madness,” when the Johnsons arrived on the scene, an arrival that proved to be a welcome one, for they co-wrote four of the album’s ten songs.
Quincy: “When they walked into the studio and started to play I could not believe my ears. Louis, the younger of the two is 20. He picked up the bass and started playing and in a matter of ten seconds the entire studio was silent, with all eyes on him. His virtuosity is incredible. Then George, 22, picked up his guitar and fell in, rocking the walls of The Rceord Plant with intensity. They told me that they also had some songs for me to hear. Four of those songs, ‘Is It Love That We’re Missin’,’ ‘Listen (What It Is)’, ‘Tryin To Find Out About You,’ and ‘Just A Little Taste Of Me’, appear on ‘Mellow Madness.'”
Prior to joining Quincy’s musical family the Brothers toured the States for a year as sidemen with Billy Preston, leaving to pursue their own musical directions. With Quincy the Brothers toured the U.S. and Japan exciting audiences with their own brand of “futuristic funk.” Louis has rapidly become one of the most sought-after bass players in the country, and in a matter of seven months he has appeared on albums by Grover Washington, Jr. “Feel So Good,” Herbie Hancock “Man-Child,” (he co-authored “The Traitor” on that album), Bill Withers “Making Music,” Bobby Womack “Safety Zone,” as well as sessions for Bob James, George Duke, Gabor Szabo. Louis’s unqiue style of playing had earned him the nickname “Thunder Thumbs,” while George’s speedy guitar style had led him to be dubbed “Lightnin’ Licks.” Appropriately, one of the songs on this, their first album is titled after their aliases.
“Look Out For #1” is a portrait of two incredibly talented young musicians/composers/vocalists whose burning proficiency knows no boundaries, and whose lilting mellowness can soothe the inner sanctums of your soul. The tunes range from the churning funk of “Free And Single,” “The Devil,” “Thunder Tumbs And Lightnin’ Licks,” and “Get The Funk Out Ma Face,” to the mesmerizing mellownes of “Tomorrow,” “Land Of Ladies” and “I’ll Be Good To You.” Their re-working the classic Beatles tune “Come Together” is a welcome and pleasant surprise highlighted by a screaming guitar solo by George.
Ably assisted by the production and arranging expertise of Quincy Jones, The Brothers Johnson first album will indeed “Get The Funk Out Your Face” and put it in your dancin’ shoes, your sleazy soul, and your loose booty. As The Brothers Johnson so aptly put it: “Thunder Thumbs And Lightnin’ Licks gonna get to your soul in ’76!!!” Beware…

Een lekker album, die een perfecte introductie vormt tot The Brothers Johnson, die goed pasten in de muziek van de tweede helft van de jaren (19)70. Funk, soul, disco en een vleugje jazz, gespeeld door virtuoze muzikanten. De productie van Quincy Jones is zoals alle “Q” producties perfect, maar ook wat veilig en voorspelbaar. De muziek van The Brothers Johnson zorgt gelukkig voor voldoende uitdaging.

Na Look Out For #1
De combinatie van The Brothers Johnson en Quincy Jones bleef voor de volgende drie albums intact:
- Right On Time (10 mei 1977)

De albums waren allen succesvol en zouden, net als het debuut, platina worden gecertifieerd in de VS. De albums bevatten met Strawberry Letter 23, Ain’t We Funkin’ Now en met name Stomp! bescheiden tot grote hits. Met name Stomp!, feitelijk een pure disco single, deed The Brothers Johnson ook buiten de VS doorbreken.
Hierna verbraken The Brothers Johnson de werkrelatie met Quincy Jones en produceerden de opvolger Winners zelf: geen succes, waarna ze in 1982 de band ophieven. Tegen die tijd werkten de broers meer aan andere projecten dan voor hun eigen muziek. Met name Louis Johnson werd een veel gevraagde sessiemuzikant en wekte mee op een aantal grote albums, waaronder Michael Jackson’s Off The Wall, Thriller en Dangerous. Hij werkte verder mee op albums van artiesten als Stanley Clarke, George Benson, Aretha Franklin, Björk, Donna Summer, The Jacksons, Karen Carpenter, Natalie Cole, Paul McCartney, Phil Collins, Rufus, Stevie Nicks, Stevie Wonder en vele anderen. Een zeer indrukwekkende lijst.

The Brothers Johnson kwamen kort bij elkaar in 1984 en brachten het onsuccesvolle Out Of Control. Dat herhaalden ze in 1988 met Kickin’ dat nog minder succesvol was. Na soloalbums en een one-off concert hier en daar kwamen de broers in 2002 bij elkaar voor een uitbreide tour door de VS. Op 21 mei 2015 overleed Louis Johnson op 60 jarige leeftijd.
