Inleiding
De wereld van Star Wars was altijd aan mij voorbij gegaan. Ik vond het helemaal niks, ik had ook niets met science-fiction. En toen werd ik vader.
Star Wars
Mijn kinderen waren helemaal wild van de films, de muziek, de karakters, het verhaal, alles! Ik heb de 6 Star Wars films dan ook meerdere malen gezien en ben iets milder in mijn oordeel. Ik vind het verhaal nog steeds onzinnig, de acteerprestaties van een bedenkelijk niveau en het hele Star Wars imperium extreem ‘overrated’, maar heb er iets meer gevoel bij en kan het aanzien. De nieuwere films heb ik niet gezien.
Meco – Star Wars And Other Galactic Funk
Met de films komt ook de muziek. De score van John Williams is spectaculair en soms mooi. Dat vond Meco Monardo ook, een Amerikaanse producer en muzikant, die al snel de rechten voor de muziek verkreeg en een disco versie uitbracht. Star Wars and Other Galactic Funk (1977) werd een doorslaand succes, ook bij ons thuis. De single Star Wars Theme/Cantina Band is de best verkochte instrumentale single aller tijden en de enige instrumentale single ooit die platina werd gecertificeerd.
Star Wars Holiday Special (1978)
The Star Wars Holiday Special
Op 17 november 1978 werd The Star Wars Holiday Special voor het eerst uitgezonden op televisie. De bijna 2 uur durende uitzending bleek een cross-over tussen de wereld van Star Wars en het Amerikaanse Thanksgiving gevoel te zijn, en werd door maar liefst 13 miljoen mensen gezien, maar toch schaamt bijna iedereen die erbij betrokken was zich diep voor het eindresultaat. En terecht overigens, het niveau van de film is vergelijkbaar met het Kiss vehikel Kiss Meets The Phantom Of The Park, dat drie weken eerder werd uitgezonden.
Na de uitgave van de tweede Star Wars film (The Enemy Strikes Back) in mei 1980, werd het idee van Star Wars en Kerst geoppperd.
Christmas In The Stars – Star Wars Christmas Album
Christmas In The Stars
Op 14 november 1980 werd het album Christmas In The Stars uitgebracht, de subtitel was Star Wars Christmas Album. Het bevat een aantal opnamen in Kerst sfeer met een Star Wars thema. Het album verhaalt over een droid fabriek waar robots gedurende het jaar speelgoed maken voor S. Claus. Een aantal aan Star Wars gelieerde medewerkers is te horen op het album, waarvan Anthony Daniels het meest in het oog springt. Daniels verzorgd de stem van de C-3PO in de films.
Ook Frank Oz, de man achter Yoda werd gevraagd mee te doen, maar dat was uitendelijk onmogelijk vanwege agenda issues. Het album is het officiële debuut van zanger Jon Bon Jovi, die hier onder zijn eigen naam Jon Bongiovi het nummer R2-D2 We Wish You A Merry Christmas zingt. Zijn neef Tony was mede producent op het album.
Producer Meco hoopte dat het succes van dit album een traditie van jaarlijkse Star Wars Kerst albums zou inluiden, maar het bleef bij dit ene album. Het is ongelooflijk maar waar, het album verkocht boven verwachting. Extra persingen waren hard nodig, maar door de implosie van platenlabel RSO Records kwam het niet tot meer exemplaren.
Pas in 1994 werd het album opnieuw uitgegeven, maar met een lelijke hoes. Twee jaar later werd het album netjes opnieuw uitgegeven op CD door Rhino Records, met de originele hoes en heuse liner-notes:
What do you call a seasonal novelty album with an unusual concept that also features the first commercial recording of a hot rock star-to-be? Try Christmas In The Stars: Star Wars Christmas Album. While it’s not as well known as, say, “Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer,” how can you beat a lyric like “Everyone will have a cookie, I bought extra for the Wookiee”?
Or the Spike Jones-style zaniness of “What Can You Get A Wookiee For Christmas (When He Already Owns A Comb?)”?
Producer Meco Monardo, best known for his disco/pop translations of classic science-fiction themes (“Star Wars And Other Galactic Funk”), hoped this would be the first in a series of annual Star Wars Christmas albums. But despite a glorious cover painted by Star Wars production artist Ralph McQuarrie, and a series of songs both clever and warm, it didn’t top the charts. In recent years, Star Wars collectors who have paid $25 or more for a vinyl version have pined for a crisp new CD release. This, then, is a Christmas gift for them, and for an entire new generation of Star Wars fans who have gotten excited by George Lucas’ space fantasy.
The album’s story line takes place in a droid factory where the robots make toys year-round for S. Claus. But they don’t quite know what to make of Christmas until the comedy duo of droids – Star Wars‘ C-3PO and R2-D2 – help explain it all. In the process, Artoo learns how to sing, or rather, whistle, to the Christmas chestnut “Sleigh Ride.”
Recorded in 1980, the majority of the album’s new songs were written by Maury Yeston, a Yale University music professor. The most distinguishable and distinguished voice belongs to that of C-3PO himself, Britisch actor Anthony Daniels. Lucasfilm’s Academy Award-winning sound artist Ben Burtt provided the sound effects of Artooo and the Wokkiee Chewbacca. And the young star-to-be was none other than an 18-year-old Jon Bon Jovi (credited as John Bogiovi), who fronts a high school choir on “R2-D2 We Wish You A Merry Christmas.” Jon’s cousin Tony ran the recording studio and coproduced the album.
After the worker droids go down their list and decide on a scarf for Luke Skywalker, perfume for Princess Leia, and earmuffs for Han Solo, C-3PO tells them about their own Christmas gift: the happiness their toys bring to children around the galaxy. As as the golden robot exclaims at the end, “Merry Christmas, everyone. And me the Force be with you always!”

Tja, dit is echt wel heel erg beroerd allemaal. Ik vond het Meco album Star Wars and Other Galactic Funk al niet geweldig, maar dat was op zijn minst nog camp (of grappig) te noemen, maar dit is erg beroerd, er valt niets te lachen…
