Inleiding

Bruce Springsteen heeft op 14 mei 2025 zijn Land Of Hope And Dreams Tour geopend in Manchester, Engeland. In de introductie naar een aantal nummers gaf hij ongezouten kritiek op de huidige Trump regering, die de VS (en de wereld) terug wil sturen naar de Middeleeuwen. De huidige president reageerde, zoals verwacht, fel en het ambt onwaardig.

Democraat

Bruce Springsteen is een Democraat. Zijn (republikeinse) fans reageren door soms nog steeds verbaasd en zelfs agressief op. Dat is op zijn minst opmerkelijk te noemen. Springsteen’s teksten gaan al sinds het begin van zijn carrière in 1973 over waarden en normen, die opkomen voor de minder bedeelden, maar vooral vrijheid voor alles en iedereen en het recht te zijn wie je bent, ongeacht ras, sexe of overtuiging. Springsteen vindt het (waarschijnlijk) al erg genoeg dat deze waarden überhaupt ter discussie staan. Hij heeft het platform om zijn mening te verkondigen en deed en doet dat dan ook. In 2016, nog voor de eerste termijn van Trump, noemde Springsteen hem “a flagrant toxic narcissist”.

Kamala Harris

Tijdens de verkiezingscampagne in 2024 steunde Bruce Springsteen de Democratische kandidaat Kamala Harris. Op 3 oktober publiceerde hij een video waarin hij uitlegde waarom.

I’m supporting Kamala Harris for President and Tim Walz for Vice President, and opposing Donald Trump and JD Vance – here’s why. We are shortly coming upon one of the most consequential elections in our nation’s history. Perhaps not since the Civil War has this country felt as politically, spiritually and emotionally divided as it does than at this moment. It doesn’t have to be this way. The common values, the shared stories that make us a great and united nation are waiting to be rediscovered and retold once again. Now that will take time, hard work, intelligence, faith, and women and men with a national good guiding their hearts.

Donald Trump is the most dangerous candidate for president in my lifetime. His disdain for the sanctity of our Constitution, the sanctity of democracy, the sanctity of the rule of law and the sanctity of the peaceful transfer of power should disqualify him from the office of president ever again. He doesn’t understand the meaning of this country, its history, or what it means to be deeply American.

On the other hand, Kamala Harris and Tim Walz are committed to a vision of this country that respects and includes everyone, regardless of class, religion, race, your political point of view or sexual identity, and they want to grow our economy in a way that benefits all, not just a few like me, on top. That’s the vision of America I’ve been consistently writing about for 55 years.

Now, everybody sees things different, and I respect your choice as a fellow citizen. But like you, I’ve only got one vote, and it’s one of the most precious possessions that I have. That’s why come Nov. 5 I’ll be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. Thanks for listening.

Om alle twijfel weg te nemen of de speeches van Springsteen uit de losse pols kwamen of eenmalig waren, publiceerde Springsteen alle introducties op zijn website.

Tonight, Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band opened their Land of Hope & Dreams Tour in Manchester, England. Bruce launched this run of shows with three statements about the situation in the United States, with comments preceding his songs “Land of Hope and Dreams,” “House of a Thousand Guitars” and “My City of Ruins.” Below are the transcripts of all three spoken segments.

Good Evening!

It’s great to be in Manchester and back in the U.K. Welcome to the Land of Hope & Dreams Tour! The mighty E Street Band is here tonight to call upon the righteous power of art, of music, of rock ‘n’ roll in dangerous times.

In my home, the America I love, the America I’ve written about, that has been a beacon of hope and liberty for 250 years, is currently in the hands of a corrupt, incompetent and treasonous administration.

Tonight, we ask all who believe in democracy and the best of our American experiment to rise with us, raise your voices against authoritarianism and let freedom ring!

Introduction to House of a Thousand Guitars

The last check, the last check on power after the checks and balances of government have failed are the people, you and me. It’s in the union of people around a common set of values now that’s all that stands between a democracy and authoritarianism. At the end of the day, all we’ve got is each other.

Introduction to My City of Ruins

There’s some very weird, strange and dangerous shit going on out there right now. In America, they are persecuting people for using their right to free speech and voicing their dissent. This is happening now.

In America, the richest men are taking satisfaction in abandoning the world’s poorest children to sickness and death. This is happening now.

In my country, they’re taking sadistic pleasure in the pain they inflict on loyal American workers.

They’re rolling back historic civil rights legislation that has led to a more just and plural society.

They are abandoning our great allies and siding with dictators against those struggling for their freedom. They are defunding American universities that won’t bow down to their ideological demands.

They are removing residents off American streets and, without due process of law, are deporting them to foreign detention centers and prisons. This is all happening now.

A majority of our elected representatives have failed to protect the American people from the abuses of an unfit president and a rogue government. They have no concern or idea for what it means to be deeply American.

The America I’ve sung to you about for 50 years is real and regardless of its faults is a great country with a great people. So we’ll survive this moment. Now, I have hope, because I believe in the truth of what the great American writer James Baldwin said. He said, “In this world, there isn’t as much humanity as one would like, but there’s enough.” Let’s pray.

In de vroege ochtend van 15 mei reageerde het Witte Huis (!) en stelde dat “the 77 million Americans that elected President Trump disagree with elitist and out-of-touch celebrities like Bruce Springsteen. Bruce is welcome to stay overseas while hardworking Americans enjoy a secure border and cooling inflation thanks to President Trump.” Maar daarmee was het nog niet gedaan. Op weg terug vanuit het Midden Oosten reageerde Trump persoonlijk, op een president onwaardige wijze en als door een bij gestoken. Hij nam in die reactie Taylor Swift ook mee, die hij een dag eerder ook al had genoemd in een bericht op zijn sociale media platform (“Has anyone noticed that, since I said ‘I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT,’ she’s no longer ‘HOT?'”).

Met name de laatste zin “Then we’ll all see how it goes for him!” is discutabel. Is dit een dreigement? Velen zagen het wel zo.

Zoals ook gewoonlijk worden de reacties van Trump steeds heftiger en ongeloofwaardiger. Maar zijn “beschuldig mijn vijanden van iets, ook al is het niet waar” tactiek werkt, zeker voor zijn achterban. Ook nu deed hij dat weer, door te suggereren dat artiesten miljoenen dollars hebben gekregen voor hun steun aan Kamala Harris.

Daar voegde hij zever uur later nog aan toe:

According to news reports, Beyoncé was paid $11,000,000 to walk onto a stage, quickly ENDORSE KAMALA, and walk off to loud booing for never having performed, NOT EVEN ONE SONG! Remember, the Democrats and Kamala illegally paid her millions of Dollars for doing nothing other than giving Kamala a full throated ENDORSEMENT. THIS IS AN ILLEGAL ELECTION SCAM AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL! IT IS AN ILLEGAL CAMPAIGN CONTRIBUTION! BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN, OPRAH, BONO AND, PERHAPS, MANY OTHERS, HAVE A LOT OF EXPLAINING TO DO!!!

Trump heeft dit eerder geroepen en dat was aantoonbaar onjuist. Maar Trump zou Trump niet zijn als hij zijn leugens blijft herhalen. Hij weet dat zijn achterban het slikt als zoete koek. Het bot-leger en alt-right kanalen, met name die op Twitter, draaien inmiddels op volle toeren. Springsteen is een pedo (‘ze’ hebben zelfs video’s waarop hij kinderen misbruikt), Springsteen is een communist, Springsteen is een marionet voor ‘de elite’, Springsteen is een verrader, niemand wil meer met Springsteen werken, Springsteen’s concerten worden door niemand bezocht, Springsteen is de duivel, enz.

De standaard reactie van Trump en co. Tegenstanders proberen weg te zetten, de aandacht afleiden van de echt belangrijke zaken en vooral veel al als onjuist bestempelde leugens de wereld in helpen. Dat is het niveau van de huidige Amerikaanse regering.

Op 20 mei 2025 trad Springsteen voor de derde keer op in een uitverkocht Manchester stadion. Hij herhaalde de kritiek en tegen het einde stelde Springsteen “The last check on power is people – you and me. At the end of the day, we have got each other.”

Springsteen vs Trump – Trump 21-05-2025

21 mei 2025

Op 21 mei 2025 postte Trump een nep video waarin hij Springsteen met een golfbal laat vallen op een podium. De beelden van de vallende Springsteen stammen uit 27 mei 2023, toen hij zich verstapte op het podium in Amsterdam. Het vijfjarige kind heeft de president nu definitief overgenomen.

De reactie van Trump op Springsteen’s kritiek toont Springsteen’s gelijk aan. De gedachte dat Springsteen onder de indruk zou zijn van Trump’s reacties kan de ijskast in. Op dezelfde dag als de nep video werd de Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band EP Land Of Hope & Dreams uitgebracht. Het betreft een live EP, opgenomen op 14 mei 2025 in Manchester. Inmiddels is de EP op alle streaming diensten beschikbaar. De tracklisting op de EP zegt alles.

Neil Young

Ook Neil Young is een overtuigd Democraat en al jaren openlijk kritisch op de denk- en handelwijze van Trump. Neil Young steunt Springsteen 100% en verwoordt het standpunt waar het om zou moeten draaien: in plaats van je druk te maken over muzikanten, doe waarvoor je er bent.

Pearl Jam / Eddie Vedder

Pearl Jam coverde op 16 mei 2025 het Springsteen nummer My City Of Ruins als steun en twee dagen late ging zanger Eddie Vedder in de situatie die is ontstaan, voordat de band een furieuze uitvoering van Neil Young’s Rockin’ In The Free World inzette.

Trump’s response had nothing to do with the issues. They didn’t talk about one of those issues, they didn’t have a conversation about one of those issues. They didn’t debate any one of those issues. All that we heard were personal attacks and threats that nobody else should even try to use their microphones or use their voice in public or they’ll be shut down.

Now that is not allowed in this country that we call America. Part of free speech is open discussion. Part of democracy is healthy public discourse. The name-calling is so beneath us. Bruce has always been as pro-American with his values and and freedom and liberty, and his justice has always remained intact. And I’m saying this now to be sure that this freedom to speak will still exist in a year or two when we come back to this microphone.

Op 25 mei 2025 trad Rage Against The Machine gitarist Tom Morello op in Boston. Tegen het einde de set, die gevuld was met politiek geladen uitspraken gericht tegen Trump en zijn regering, zei Morello:

Bruce is going after Trump because Bruce, his whole life, he’s been about truth, justice, democracy, equality. And Trump is mad at him because Bruce draws a bigger audience. Fuck that guy.

Hij speelde vervolgens een cover van Springsteen’s The Ghost Of Tom Joad, nadat hij al eerder in zijn set Woody Guthrie’s This Land Is Your Land had gespeeld, een nummer dat Springsteen in 1986 op zijn monumentale Live 1975-85 boxset had geplaatst.

Op 27 mei 2025 plaatste Morello een tweet, waarin hij Springsteen’s nummer No Surrender aanhaalde: “No retreat baby, no surrender”.

Bono

Ook op 27 mei 2025 was U2 zanger Bono te gast in het programma Jimmy Kimmel Live. Toen Bono werd gevraagd of hij pro-Springsteen of pro-Trump was antwoordde Bono: “There’s ony one Boss in America”. Gevraagd naar een reactie op de 19 mei 2025 berichten van Trump, reageerde Bono:

To be in the company of Bruce Springsteen, Beyoncé and Oprah – I’d play tambourine in that band.

U2 and I have never been paid or played a show to support any candidate for any party. It has never happened. I know that it’s called Truth Socal, it seems to be pretty antisocial, and not very true a lot of the time.

En Springsteen zelf? Ook op 24 en 27 mei 2025 herhaalde hij dezelfde boodschap. De verwachting is dat de huidige Land Of Hope And Dreams tour in het teken zal blijven staan van de huidige politieke situatie in de VS. Schijnbaar levert het energieke, gedreven concerten op. De recensies zijn lovend.
