Inleiding
Parliament had voorzichtig aan het succes geroken met het voorlaatste album Chocolate City. Met Mothership Connection en de introductie van aliens en ruimteschepen werd de muziekwereld (eindelijk) veroverd.
Parliament
Na de uitgave van Chocolate City op 8 april 1975, werd het tijd voor het opbouwen van de P-Funk mythologie. Voorman George Clinton was onder de indruk van The Who’s Tommy en The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band en beschreef ze als “the classiest two pieces of music I had ever seen where everything related to each other. So I wanted to do one of those kinds of things.” Clinton gaf er zijn eigen unieke draai aan en ontwikkelde een buitenaards concept. Het was niet alleen uniek (de Star Wars saga bestond nog niet), maar de combinatie van zwarten en ruimte(schepen) was onweerstaanbaar. Clinton: “Put niggas in places that you don’t usually see ‘em. And nobody had seen ‘em on no spaceships! Once you seen ‘em sittin’ on spaceships like it was Cadillac then it was funny, cool.”
Aldus geschiedde: het volgende album zou in het teken staan van buitenaardse wezens en funky muziek: Mothership Connection.
Parliament – Mothership Connection
Mothership Connection
Op 15 december 1975 verscheen het vijfde Parliament album, Mothership Connection, het eerste deel van wat een trilogie zou worden, waarvan The Clones Of Dr. Funkenstein (1976) en Funkentelechy vs. The Placebo Syndrome (1977) de tweede en derde incarnaties zouden worden. Mothership Connection introduceerde de term P-Funk, een aanduiding voor de samenstelling van Clinton vehikels Parliament en Funkadelic, ook wel A Parliafunkadelicment Thang genoemd, in het kort “P-Funk”. Daarnaast wordt op Mothership Connection de figuur Starchild voorgesteld, een van de leidende figuren in het P-Funk universum.
Het album bleek ook commercieel een voltreffer. Met name de single Give Up The Funk (Tear The Roof Off The Sucker) werd een hit. Het album werd het eerste goud gecertifieerde Parliament album worden (het werd uiteindelijk zelfs platina gecertificeerd). In de toekomst zouden er nog meerdere volgen.

Net als op de opener van het voorgaande album Chocolate City, opent Mothership Connection met de woorden van een DJ, ditmaals afkomstig van een (buitenaards) radio station:

De muziek die wordt gebracht is niet alleen funky, wat in feit staat voor het ‘goed’ in de wereld, het herbergt tevens helende krachten.

Parliament – Mothership Connection – Reclames
Op Mothership Connection (Star Child) wordt het karakter Starchild geïntroduceerd. Een smooth-talker, die coolness uitstraalt, maar ook een verhaal heeft.

Halverwege het nummer wordt de spiritual Swing Low Sweet Chariot gezongen, wat in de donkere tijden van slavernij en tewerkstelling werd gebruikt als een gecodeerde manier van communicatie, zodat mensen konden ontsnappen. Is de “Mothership” de nieuwe/hedendaagse manier om te ontsnappen?
Unfunky UFO verhaalt over een ruimteschip gevuld met ongelukkigen afkomstig van een planeet waar een groot tekort is aan funk, die niets anders kunnen dan constateren dat “We’re unfunky and we’re obsolete”. De oplossing? “Gonna take your funk and make it mine”. Het lukt vooralsnog niet, ook niet in het nummer Supergroovalisticprosifunkstication. Het zwaartepunt van het verhaal ligt op Give Up The Funk (Tear The Roof Off The Sucker), waarop de aliens de funk op aarde horen en deze willen claimen voor henzelf.

Ze dreigen zelfs: “Tear the roof off, we’re gonna tear the roof off the mothersucker / Tear the roof off the sucker”.
Het album eindigt met (de terugkeer? van) het Thumpasorus volk (waarover later meer). Ze chanten het funky “Gaga googa ga ga googa / Ga ga goo ga ga”.
Muziek
Het album is funky in het kwadraat en über-dansbaar. Het album introduceert de ex-James Brown blazers Fred Wesley en Maceo Parker, die hun geluk niet opkonden. Na de haast dictatoriale Brown, die met boetes en afstandelijkheid zijn muzikanten in het gareel trachtte te houden, bood Clinton de ultieme muzikale vrijheid. Ook keyboard speler Bernie Worrell en bassist Bootsy Collins vervullen hoofdrollen op Mothership Connection, een klassiek funk album.

Hoes
Tijdens de opnamen voor het album realiseerde Clinton zich al snel dat hij een ruimteschip wilde hebben voor de albumhoes. Parliament’s manager ging op zoek en kwam terecht bij een rekwisieten opslagplaats ergens in Los Angeles, waar hij een compleet ruimteschip vond dat was gebruikt in de science fiction film The Day The Earth Stood Still uit 1951. Dat ruimteschip is te zien op de albumhoes.
Recensie
Ik ben helemaal weg van het P-Funk universum. Ook alle albums van Funkadelic (waaronder het fantastische One Nation Under A Groove) vind ik prachtige, afwisselende albums. Andere P-Funk bands als Parlet, The Brides Of Funkenstein en natuurlijke Bootsy’s Rubber Band, die allemaal tegelijkertijd albums maakten, waarbij muzikanten regelmatig op meerdere albums speelden, zijn net zo goed.
Op de misser Handcuffs, een uiterst sexistisch nummer dat ook destijds de wenkbrauwen moet hebben doen fronsen, na, is het een en al feest op dit album. De funk glorieert, van alle kanten wordt de luisteraar aangevallen met funky bas, gitaar, blazers, zang, koortjes en drums. Het is onmogelijk stil te zitten op deze funk klassieker.

Na Mothership Connection
Zoals gezegd, Mothership Connection was nog maar het begin. In 1976 en 1977 volgden deel 2 (The Clones Of Dr. Funkenstein) en 3 (Funkentelechy vs. The Placebo Syndrome) . In 1976 werd de spectaculaire P-Funk Earth Tour georganiseerd, waar vanaf oktober elke avond een heus Mothership op het podium landde, waar vervolgens Clinton als Dr. Funkenstein uit zou verschijnen.
